Starting school is a big milestone for both tamariki and their whānau. At KCC, our dedicated 4's+ Learning Hub in Phoenix House supports children to build the confidence, independence and practical skills they need as they prepare for their transition to school.
Our 4's+ Learning Hub
Our dedicated 4's+ Learning Hub provides a specialised learning environment for tamariki aged 4 and over.
Through focused, hands-on and play-based learning experiences, children are supported to develop their independence, confidence, responsibility and school readiness skills.
Building Skills for School and Life
We believe school readiness is about much more than letters and numbers. Tamariki are supported to develop important skills such as:
- Independence and self-help skills
- Confidence in new situations
- Communication and social skills
- Problem-solving
- Taking responsibility
- Following routines
- Working alongside others
- Early literacy and numeracy
- Fine motor skills
Learning Through Real Experiences
At KCC, children have opportunities to learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences that help build confidence and independence.
Through experiences such as caring for animals, gardening and simple carpentry, tamariki develop responsibility, problem-solving skills and confidence while learning through doing.
Preparing for the Transition to School
We support tamariki and their whānau as they prepare for the exciting transition to primary school.
During each term, our tamariki also visit a local primary school, giving them the opportunity to experience what a new entrant classroom feels like. These visits help children become more familiar with the school environment and build confidence for their next journey.
